Did you know:
21/2/2008
Jesus, I can't attend a gig nowadays without a whole lot of extended buzzing in my left ear afterwards. Either I'm getting too old for this or it was another case of standing too close to the speakers again (last time it happened, I was breaking my neck to DJ Premier). Probably a combination of both. After a lifetime of circumaural headphones some damage is to be expected I guess. As for being too close to the speakers, well, you kinda forget where you're standing when you're so immersed in the music that you can almost taste the yummy post-rock goodness at the tip of your tongue.
Explosions In The Sky, the band, was good. Explosions In The Sky, the gig, could've been better. See, the problem with putting a band like them in a club like Ruums with bad acoustics and a so-so sound system is that a lot of the music just ends up echoing all over the place. And the performance was far too short. Shorter still for me, cos I had this brilliant idea that I would skip the opening band by arriving half an hour later, only to discover that the Explosions were already, well, half an hour into their set.
Still, I enjoyed myself. I even had a brief emo moment during 'The Only Moment We Were Alone' (the only song title I can remember without going through my Explosions albums). Something about seeing three guys onstage slashing their guitars in total hair-swingin', rock-out unison gives me goosebumps and makes me wanna raise my fists in the air and shout out my undying love for this beautiful planet and all the beautiful people who live in it and Marion Caunter is such a gorgeous babe and fall to my knees and cry my eyes out cos it's too much! Oh too much! DEAR GOD!!!
Then this guy flicks his cigarette ashes on my arm.
